Data Handling
This page explains how SimpleMonth collects, uses, stores, and deletes user data in plain language. It is intended to complement our Privacy Policy and Security documentation.
Overview
SimpleMonth is a personal finance application that helps users track accounts, transactions, goals, and net worth. To provide this service, we process limited financial and account-related data. We design our systems to minimize data collection, restrict access, and give users control over their data.
We do not sell user data, and we do not use financial data for advertising or marketing purposes.
Data We Collect
Depending on which features you use, we may process the following categories of data:
Account & Profile Data
- Email address
- User ID (generated by our authentication system)
- Basic account preferences (currency, settings)
Financial Data (User-Authorized)
When you connect accounts via Plaid or enter data manually:
- Account metadata (account name, type, institution)
- Balances
- Transactions (amount, date, merchant, category)
- Investment account summaries (if enabled)
- Asset and liability data (if supported by your institution)
Authentication Data
- Encrypted credentials managed by our authentication provider
- Session tokens used to keep you signed in securely
We do not store bank usernames or passwords.
How We Use Your Data
We use your data only to provide the core functionality of SimpleMonth:
- Display account balances and transaction history
- Categorize and summarize spending
- Calculate goals, net worth, and trends
- Sync and refresh connected accounts at your request
- Secure your account and prevent unauthorized access
- Provide customer support when requested
We do not use your data for:
- Advertising
- Data brokerage
- Selling to third parties
- Behavioral profiling outside the app
Data Sources
Your data enters SimpleMonth through one of the following methods:
- Direct user input (manual accounts, assets, goals)
- Third-party providers you explicitly authorize (such as Plaid)
- Internal system events (account creation, settings updates)
All third-party access requires explicit user consent.
Data Storage & Processing
Storage
- Data is stored in a secure cloud database with strict access controls
- Each user's data is isolated using database-level security rules
- Sensitive configuration data is stored securely and never embedded in client code
Processing
- Data is processed only when required for app functionality
- Server-side processing is used for sensitive operations
- Client access is restricted to user-authorized data only
Data Retention
We retain data only as long as necessary to provide the service:
- Active accounts: data is retained while your account is active
- Disconnected accounts: related data may be retained until you delete it or your account
- Deleted accounts: associated personal and financial data is deleted or anonymized within a reasonable timeframe, except where retention is required for legal or operational reasons
You may request deletion at any time.
Data Sharing
We share data only with trusted service providers required to operate SimpleMonth, such as:
- Authentication services
- Database and hosting providers
- Financial data aggregators you authorize
These providers are contractually obligated to protect your data and use it only for the intended purpose.
We do not share data with advertisers or unrelated third parties.
User Control & Deletion
You remain in control of your data:
- You can disconnect linked accounts at any time
- You can edit or delete manually entered data
- You may request account deletion, which removes associated personal data
- You can contact us to request clarification or export of your data

Security Safeguards
Data handling is supported by multiple layers of security, including:
- Encryption in transit using TLS
- Database-level access controls
- Role-based system permissions
- Monitoring and logging for abnormal activity
